Hi Tuffy , I think you are referring to Cornus sessilis in California. Cornus mas is not well adapted to semi wetland conditions but does tolerate shade well and hot summers and grows well in the Mediterranean climates of Europe.
Great list of early flowering plants including some medicinal tree favourites. I would say don't discount the fruit of the flowering quince as ours makes the most delicious quince jelly, making a brilliant tangy alternative to marmalade and mango chutney and suchlike. And the fruits of cornelian cherry are so yummy it is a race to get them before all eaten by birds!

On the Cornelian cherry, is it the same as other dogwoods in California in that they don’t mind winter wet feet and shade?
I realize we are Mediterranean and you are discussing cool temperate climate plants, but just thought I’d ask… I’d love a cornelian cherry here!
